isasters, large and small, have a big effect on individuals and communities. Most people are in need of mental health relief after experiencing a disaster. Everyone functions better immediately and in the long run, if they have effective debriefing and help with grief and anxiety as soon as possible.
Triage and treatment must take place physically and mentally. Traumatic events change lives. It can be a well managed and effective change handled with care and compassion.
Community Chaplains create stability on-the-scene of disasters as they assist victims with comfort, supplies, resources and contact with loved ones. In times of disaster, individual and mass events require the full attention of police, fire and emergency personnel. Whether there is one or one hundred hurting people, they each have immediate needs and their families want to know where and how they are.
Community Chaplains establish a "Comfort Zone" and receive Health & Welfare Inquiries on-the-scene. They are in touch with police, fire and coroner to connect families together whether living or dead. They take, research, call and disseminate HWI's to locate and reunite families. They also accompany the dead when recovered to the mortuary, as well as assist families through the identification process and the return of the remains.
isasters are sometimes seen as short lived events, but in reality, they are longer term, inflicting significant impact on individuals and communities. Of all the immediate and long lasting effects disaster imposes upon its victims, PTSD can be the one that holds on and holds back individuals and entire communities for years to come. When all the helpers have gone, people are soon left to initiate and energize major projects when most of them are still too tired and traumatized. CC's provide mental health triage, debrief and community resources as soon as possible. There is urgent need to provide real help to those who live through disaster, both victims and importantly, the emergency services personnel such as Fire, Police, Dr's, Nurses, EMT's and Red Cross workers.
